Local AKL History

On May 11, 1968, twenty-seven men signed the charter for the Alpha Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity here at the University of Idaho. These charter members were able to display their new charter in their residence at 1038 Blake Avenue . In 1974, the university refused to renew the lease on the house, and eventually razed it for parking, leaving AKL members no option but to move into the old Forney Hall. For four more years, the Alpha Phi Corporation Board sought to find better housing, but in 1978, after several years of decline, Alpha Phi's charter was transferred to the National Fraternity, where it was held in trust. During the next decade several attempts were made to acquire housing and recolonize, but none of these met with success.

In the fall of 1990, another recolonization effort was made. The University's Greek Advisor at that time discouraged the attempt, saying that the campus couldn't support another fraternity. However, support from the National Fraternity made the effort an instant success. By the end of the school year, thirty-two men had been initiated into the new colony. After overcoming some opposition, recognition by the University's Interfraternity Council was finally obtained.

The next fall, Alpha Phi colonists returned to campus and moved into the residence at 701 Nez Perce Drive , which had been leased from the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. The rest of the year was spent in preparation for the rechartering of Alpha Phi. In the spring of 1992, Alpha Phi's charter application was accepted by the National Fraternity. Soon thereafter the Chartering Banquet was held.

On April 25, 1992, National Headquarter representatives, the AKL National President, numerous alumni and university officials met to celebrate the official return of AKL to the University of Idaho campus. Forty-two collegiate members signed the new charter. The members were proud of their accomplishments, but realized that their future would not be secure until a permanent housing solution was found.

On December 9, 1995, Alpha Phi Chapter secured itself a permanent existence on the University of Idaho campus, when it dedicated the house at 701 Nez Perce Drive. The house was leased from Alpha Chi Omega. The lease will last until 2071.

Today, the Alpha Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity is one of the strongest on its campus with numerous awards and achievements. Alpha Phi chapter has been awarded the Founders' Award, the most prestigious of the national awards, which is given for superior practices in the beliefs, ideals and purposes of the fraternity, for the last five years. We will be in competition for our sixth and seventh consecutive awards this August in Orlando, Florida, at the biennial conclave.

Many of these honors could never have been achieved without our large membership. Currently, 86 active undergraduate members and pledges participate in over 20 intramural sports with teams at all skill levels, including a University of Idaho Intramural Championship team. Philanthropies and community service events are plentiful, logging over 2000 man-hours last year alone. Other opportunites for members to become involved in the campus and the community include a busy social schedule, various educational programs, and numberous brotherhood events. The opportunities to grow and perform as an Alpha Kappa Lambda member all serve to lead one to the ultimate and complete college experience.

Alpha Phi prides itself in producing men of Judeo-Christian principles: Leadership, Scholarship, Loyalty, and Self-Support. We produce men who, most importantly, are prepared to accept leadership responsibilities in fulfilling the obligations of life. We are always looking for men who foster these beliefs and ideals and who will make the future of Alpha Kappa Lambda even brighter than its history.
