The IR-4 Program

IR-4 is a federal agriculture program that carries out the research needed for the registration or "clearance" of pest control materials on minor crops. We work with farmers, agriculture scientists and extension personnel to carry out the research and petition the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in order to obtain tolerances for specific pesticide uses. IR-4 receives funds to carry out its mission from both USDA-Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) and USDA-Agricultural Research Service (ARS).  Cooperating scientists, consisting mainly of state and federal agricultural researchers, state extension personnel and commodity grower groups, carry out field trials to develop crop safety data and to collect residue samples. These samples are analyzed in IR-4 regional laboratories located at state agricultural experiment stations and federal analytical laboratories.

IR-4 is providing funding for efficacy data generated on biopesticides. The RFP can be accessed from Rutgers University. Click on 'biopesticides' option, then click on 'news' option. This is the first time that IR-4 has taken this sort of action for biopesticides with monies left over from the formal RFP biopesticide program in the fall. An RFP for general efficacy research for conventional pesticides is soon to follow.
