TRiO Programs
The name TRiO refers to the five educational assistance programs funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965.
In the mid 1960's, in support of President Lyndon Johnson's “War on Poverty,” Congress established a series of educational support programs to help low income and first generation Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America's economic and social life. TRiO programs serve over 800,000 Americans. |

Three programs were initially funded (hence the term TRiO), now there are five:
1) Upward Bound offers participating high school students an intensive six-week pre-college experience during the summer;
2) Educational Talent Search serves middle school and high school students during the school year;
3) Student Support Services provides academic and personal support services to college students;
4) Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program serves juniors and seniors in college with the purpose of encouraging and preparing participants to enter graduate school;
5) Educational Opportunity Centers provide college entrance and financial aid information to older Americans who are economically disadvantaged.
