Text: Linear Algebra and Its Applications (4th ed.) by David Lay
Catalog description: Linear equations, matrices, linear
transformations, eigenvalues, diagonalization; applications.
Recommended Preparation: One semester of calculus
(Math 160 or Math 170).
Grades:
- 6 homework assignments: 6*10 = 60 points
- 3 exams: 3*100 = 300 points
- Final exam: 140 points
- TOTAL: 500 points
Schedule:
- See the posted
lecture schedule as well as the
homework lists.
- Video students should pace themselves so as to complete the course by
the course completion deadline. However, there are no specific due dates for homework or exams for video students, other than
- HW1 and HW2 should be submitted before taking exam 1
- HW3 and HW4 should be submitted before taking exam 2
- HW5 and HW6 should be submitted before taking exam 3
Homework:
I will assign homework for each section we cover. You should view this as
a minimum recommendation -- feel free to work more homework problems
than what I assign, particularly on topics that you have trouble with.
As with most modern texts, the back of the book has answers to homework problems. Use these
wisely -- don't look at the answers until you have worked the problems
yourself! Some notes on the homework assignments:
- Please be sure that the homework you turn in is done neatly
and in an organized and readable manner. I will not grade
sloppy homework.
- Write on only one side of the paper.
- Be sure that you show all of your steps in the homework.
- I will not grade every problem in a homework set. Rather, I will select
a few problems to spot-check and base your homework grade on how you did
on those problems, with some points also awarded on how complete your work is.
Exams:
- Before each exam you should look at the
list of review topics
for that exam. These lists give the topics which will
appear on the exam and
provide a framework for your preparations.
- The exams are are closed-book, closed-notes
(with the exception of notes I provide), and no calculators allowed.
Each exam has a one-hour time limit.
- The final exam for the course is comprehensive.
