We are constructing Fugue’s 20th anniversary issue in the form of a regionally based issue. Bruce Barcott said, “We created the northwest with words,” but we are adding that it is this region, which causes writers to write. This latter thought is what we are developing our anniversary issue around – the writers of the west, but more specifically the insiders, the born, the original settlers versus the outsiders, the migrators, the transplants, the carpetbaggers. What causes the insiders to stay here and write about this place, and what causes the outsiders to come to this place to write?
We are soliciting works from writers, and we will also have a general call for papers from “unknown” writers. The pieces should reflect this idea of the power or the mystery of the west – either through poetry, fiction or nonfiction – and consider the idea of insider versus outsider; born to a place versus adopting a land.
We are invested in creating a powerful issue and we believe including a piece by you would only strengthen the meaning we are working to define. We value your contribution to this issue to promote the MFA program, the University of Idaho, and western writing. We appreciate any piece you care to include.
The submission due date is January 1, 2010.
When you submit via e-mail, please type “Regional” in the subject line AND be sure to follow the general submission guidelines as described below.
All other submissions will be considered for our summer/fall 2010 issue. Thanks for your continued support.
