Project Description:
We designed a manufacturing fixture/jig for Stryker
Endoscopy to help their assemblers build rigid endoscopes. The current
process is very skill oriented, and there are a limited number of people
who are able to efficiently build endoscopes. We primarily focused on the
issue of loading optical fibers. Optical fibers are very brittle, and they
are often broken during the assembly process. We began by defining an"official"
problem statement. It is as follows:
"Our goal is to develop
an assembly process to aid a person in the loading of optical fibers and
lens tube into an endoscope. This process should allow for an acceptable
production rate. Regardless of production rate, the assembly of the scopes
should be made easier and more repeatable. Our process must not compromise
endoscope quality or performance in any way. "
