• July 3 - France transfers sovereignty to new republic of Algeria.
• August - November - Cuban missile crisis -- USSR wants to build missile bases in Cuba; Kennedy orders Cuban blockage, lifts blockage after Russians back down.
• October 1 - James H. Meredith, escorted by federal marshals, registers at the University of Mississippi.
• December 24 - Cuba releases 1,113 prisoners of 1961 invasion attempt.
• Burundi, Jamaica, Western Samoa,Uganda and Trinidad and Tobago become independent.
• William Faulkner wins the Pulitzer for The Reivers.
