• May 1 - American U-2 spy plane, piloted by Francis Gary Powers, is shot down over Russia.
• May 16 - Khruschev kills Paris summit conference because of the U-2 spy plane incident.
• May 23 - Adolf Eichmann, responsible for the death of millions of Jews, is captured by the Israelis in Argentina.
• August 19 - Francis Gary Powers is sentenced to prison for 10 years.
• Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Madagascar and Zaire (Belgian Congo) gain independence.
• August 7 - Cuba begins confiscation of $770 million of US property.
• There are 900 military advisors in South Vietnam.
