June 28-30 - Workers uprise against Communist rule in Poznan, Poland. The rebellion inspires Hungarian students to stage a protest against Communism in Budapest.
July 26 - Egypt takes control of Suez Canal.
October - Hungarian rebellion forces Soviet troops to withdraw from Budapest.
October 29 - Israel launches attack on Egypt's Sinai peninsula and drives towards the Suez Canal.
November 1 - Hungary withdraws from the Warsaw Pact.
November 4- Soviet troops reclaim Budapest.
November 5 - British and French invade Port Said on the Suez Canal.
November 6 - US forced cease-fire treaty stops British, French and Israeli advance.
Morocco gains independence.
The first Trans-Atlantic telephone cable is completed. The 2,250 mile cable connects Newfoundland and Scotland.
