Dusty
Berggren (BS 08) was selected outstanding ChE Senior by her peers. Dusty was active with the
WERC Design team, the ChE hydrogen fuel cell car, and
served as secretary for the student chapter of AIChE.
She began her PhD studies in chemical engineering at Oregon State
University this fall.

James
Russell (BS 08)
received the Alumni Award for Excellence for the 2007
academic year. Dr. David Drown served as his
academic advisor. James' interest in model cars
was the catalyst in beginning the ChE Hydrogen fuel cell
car at the University of Idaho. James served as
President for the student chapter of AIChE. He is
employed with British Petroleum in Anchorage, Alaska. |

Two ChE teams earned awards at
the recent 2008 Engineering Design Expo held April 25,
2008. The team of Dusty Berggren (BS 08), Joshua
Kane, James Russell (BS 08) and Tyler Vincent (BS 08)
received an award for Excellence in Technical
Presentations for their research project, "Integrated
Approach to Inland Desalination and Concentrate
Disposal." The second team of
Arthur Richardson (BS 08), Jeff
Miller (BS 08) and Adam Hall (BS 08) earned
distinction for Excellence in Poster Presentations for
their research project, "Machining Oil Water Lubricant
Demulsification and Water Recovery." Each team
received a $200.00 prize. Click

assistant professor at the Idaho Falls campus was

The team of
Adam Hall (BS 08), Jeff Miller (BS 08), and Adam Hall
(BS 08) earned a 2nd place finish and $1,000
in the 18th annual Waste and
Environmental Design Competition in Las Cruces, New
Mexico. Their research project, "Machining Oil
Water Lubricant Demulsification and Water Recovery",
focused on removing emulsified oils used in metalworking
from effluent water. This research project also
garnered an Award for Excellence in Poster Presentations
at the 2008 Engineering Design Expo. Faculty
advisor, Dave Drown, received the Outstanding Advisor
award, a certificate, a plaque and a check for $1250.00.

The 2008 AIChE Pacific Northwest
Regional Conference was held at Washington State
University April 25-26, 2008. UI chemical
engineering students did extremely well in the ChE Car
competition, returning with three awards.
"Dextrose Defender," a car based on glucose-activated
batteries, earned a first place in the Poster
Presentation and The Most Creative Design award.
"Tick Tock Iodine Clock," a car based on a proton
exchange membrane utilizing slightly pressurized
hydrogen gas as a reactant, earned a second place in the
Reaction Car Competition.
