“Thank you very much for
the scholarship. I returned to graduate school ten years after receiving my
bachelor’s degree. It has been an exhilarating challenge and would not have
been possible without the support and generosity of many people. Your
scholarship paid 1/3 of my tuition. This has allowed me to resume my
studies and pursue my research. I plan to pursue a PhD in rangeland
ecology and a career that allows me to help the development of
ecologically sustainable floodplain grazing systems. Perhaps more
importantly, you have been a part of providing me with an opportunity to
enrich the lives of my children, Samantha and Levi, ages 8 and 6. My
research has inspired them to follow their dreams and take an avid interest
in science.”
“I am very happy to be a
recipient of the Athena scholarship. I am one year away from graduating
with a bachelor degree in computer engineering with a cumulative GPA
of 3.30. I am a single mom of a 7-year old boy. My ex-husband terminated
his parental rights almost three years ago, which means that it is entirely
up to me to provide the financial support for my son. As every one knows,
college is very expensive and I believe being a single mom compounds that.
Any scholarships that I receive helps immensely in helping to feed, clothe,
and provide a good home for me and my son. After graduation, I hope to be
able to find a job that I enjoy as well as providing me an income great
enough to support myself. Thank you for helping me to fund my education.”
“Since graduating from the
UI, I moved to Iowa where I am currently pursuing my PhD in AgEd.
The scholarship that I received helped me personally, financially, and
spiritually. Financially, the money helped make ends meet. As a single
mother, with a 10 yr old daughter, and receiving no child support, it was
much needed, as you can imagine. Personally, the money boosted my
self-esteem. It was a much-needed shot in the arm to help me finish my
education. When things get tough, it was nice to get recognition and
support to help this venture seem a little more bearable. Spiritually, the
gift was another way the Good Lord once again came through for Savanna and
I. Thank you!”
